The Job I’ve Been Trusted With – Part 4 “Beyond the Court, Into the Community”

In my last blog, I talked about the bond between a coach and their athletes—how that connection can shape lives both on and off the court. But over time, I’ve realized that connection goes even further. It stretches beyond the locker room, beyond the hardwood. In a place like Southeastern Oklahoma, it extends into the heart of the entire community.

This offseason, I’ve had the chance to step outside the walls of Madill High and meet athletes from different schools, different backgrounds, all united by the same passion for the game of basketball. When I’m in the gym with them, I don’t focus on what jersey they wear. Instead, I think about how I can help them get better—how I can teach them something new, challenge them to grow, and, hopefully, fuel their dreams of playing at the next level.

Of course, the journey is never without obstacles. Life and basketball both throw roadblocks our way. But if there’s one message I try to leave with every young player I meet, it’s this: be consistent, stay humble, and always keep a learning mindset. Never stop seeking knowledge, because the game has so much to teach if you’re willing to listen.

The past couple of months have been some of the most rewarding of my coaching life. I’ve seen kids prepare for the upcoming season with a hunger that excites me. I’ve watched athletes who thought their fire was gone rediscover their love for basketball. And I’ve had the privilege to walk alongside them in that process. That kind of transformation—it’s a blessing, and it’s something I’ll never take for granted.

This season will be special, not just because of wins or losses, but because I’m doing what I love, right where I’m supposed to be. Basketball season is just around the corner, and to the athletes, coaches, fans, and parents—I can’t wait to share every moment of it with you.
